A Bates Eye View of River Cottage Open Day

We always have a stream of photos, and stories from our events so we thought, as a team, we would keep you updated, as live as possible with all the event action. For photos, recipes, tips and quotes, keep an eye on the Events Team Blog.

My partner Lyn decided to book the day with you at RC. I was a little cynical about it but went along with it as I have always agreed with Hugh’s philosophy. I fully and wearily expected to be bombarded with expensive meal invites that I could not say no to, commercial propaganda and having to dig deep into my pocket.

What I got was the opposite.

A down to earth pleasant experience in keeping with my local roots of Somerset. Free trades displays from Simon Connett a true expert with metal,  basket and hurdle making from Mike Millman, and a demo of spinning! Where would you see that? and delightful happy livestock which represent the West Country.

Very genuine friendly staff who always displayed good humour despite the weather. (Especially on the barbecue grill) And a truly magnificent  Beef burger washed down with local brew at less than the cost elsewhere. Best of all there was not one stall selling   “tat” in sight. I was enthralled with the demonstration of Salami making. I have to say the samples I tasted were delicious. I make my bread here in Chaffcome nearly every day. We make our own beer, country wine and preserves.  I cook using common sense (when I can find it) and whatever is available.

I am so sorry to send you so many images but I just could not stop taking pictures.

Best Wishes

Lewis and Lyn, Chard Somerset
