Contents of the Kitchen Hamper

The River Cottage Cookbook – RRP £30.00

Ordinarily the word 'lifestyle' is more likely to be applied to slender magazine articles puffing lofts full of Eames furniture rather than books about smallholdings in Dorset.

The River Cottage Cookbook, however, is a hefty 450 pages of pure, gumbooted rural lifestyle; and one could not wish it shorter. We’ve also suggested recipes from this book for some of the products in your starter hamper.
The River Cottage Apron – RRP £23.00

Specially printed with our logo, this apron from Green Fibres is made from organic cotton and is worn by all our team at River Cottage. Please note this comes in charcoal only with our River Cottage logo printed in green.

Beech Board – RRP £8.00

Our friend Mike from the Pine Clinic in nearby Chideock, Dorset, makes our beautiful boards from English beech. We use them here at HQ or in our Canteen and they are wonderful for presentation purposes for cheese or canapés, or sturdy enough to use as a cutting surface. The small version included in this hamper is approximately 23 cm x 16 cm.

Herb Seeds from Tamar Organics (4 packets) – RRP £1.67 each

Basil – Its greatest friends are the Mediterranean vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and courgettes but it also combines beautifully with fish. A simple rapeseed oil and lemon juice mixed with finely shredded basil leaves makes an excellent drizzling sauce for barbecued fish such as mackerel.

Chives – Mix with soured cream, crème fraiche or a thick yoghurt (such as our own River Cottage well and truly "Live" 95% fat free organic natural yoghurt), then add to soups as a garnish. Alternatively use as a filling for jacket potatoes or a dip for crunchy vegetables.

Coriander – wonderful in salsas to go with grilled meat or fish, try our fresh green tomato and coriander salsa on page 104, of the River Cottage Cookbook.

Dill – Too often "forced too hard" in heated greenhouses the supermarket ‘growing pots’ have very feeble flavour. It’s well worth growing your own dill and goes very well with fish. Stuff inside the cavity of a gutted mackerel before placing on the BBQ or use in the cure and accompanying sauce of my Gravad Max on page 328, of the River Cottage Cookbook.

Cornish Sea Salt – RRP £3.55

Take…the clearest, turquoise waters of Cornwall’s Atlantic ocean; nature’s ultimate renewable resource.

Add…actually, add nothing. Simply hand-harvest the purest, brilliantly white, flaky sea salt crystals in a simple natural process that works with nature.

Taste…Sea salt crystals of great purity that melt in the mouth and add real flavour intensity to the things you love to eat. This sea salt offers more taste for less salt, making it a healthier alternative to traditional table salt.

Know…Cornish Sea Salt contains more than sixty naturally occurring trace elements essential for your well-being. These sea salt crystals crumble easily between the fingers too, so no need to shake or grind!

Devon Honey – RRP £4.35

From Basterfields at Ottery St Mary in Devon, their products are prepared by hand in their cottage kitchen, always in small batches and to traditional recipes.  Their one hundred hives of honeybees are situated in apiaries within a ten mile radius of their home.  Spread this delicious thick set honey on to freshly baked bread.

2 bottles of River Cottage Stinger – RRP £2.95 per bottle

Hugh had great pleasure in developing this beer with Badger Ales personally, we've had great fun testing it ever since! Stinger is an organic handcrafted ale which uses organic nettles handpicked in Dorset. 2 x 500ml Bottles of River Cottage Stinger Organic Ale, ABV 4.5%. The new style bottles are lighter and therefore made from less glass!

Of course if you don’t want to drink it, you can use to make batters, bread and adding to stews!

Doves Farm Yeast – RRP £1.15

Based on the Wiltshire/Berkshire border, Doves Farm Foods was established in 1978 by Michael and Clare Marriage. Simple and easy to use at home, without any need to activate or re-hydrate, their quick yeast comes ready to add straight from the pack, into the mixing bowl, with all the other baking ingredients. It is ideal for use in traditional bread and yeast cookery as well as domestic bread making machines. It is presented in a 125g vacuum pack and has a special re-sealable tab to keep the product fresh once it has been opened. If the open pack is rolled down, re-sealed with the tab and stored in the top of the fridge door, it can continue to be used for up to three months.

Shipton Mill White Flour – RRP £1.50

At Shipton they mill a wide range of organic flour. However there is more to them than just being a speciality miller of organic flour. They have a deep seated belief that what they do, they do better than anybody!

It is recorded in the Domesday Book that a mill stood where the current mill stands. The stoneground flours that now bear the historic name of Shipton Mill are made with traditional French Burr stone millstones in the self-same way as in medieval days and as much of the grain as possible comes from local farms. Shipton Mill stoneground flour is once again a product of the mill - and of the place. Corn continues to come in for milling, in part, from the same Cotswold landscape that is the setting for the mill.
