The River Cottage Cookbook – RRP £30.00
Ordinarily the word 'lifestyle' is more likely to be applied to slender magazine articles puffing lofts full of Eames furniture rather than books about smallholdings in Dorset.
The River Cottage Cookbook, however, is a hefty 450 pages of pure, gumbooted rural lifestyle; and one could not wish it shorter. We’ve also suggested recipes from this book for some of the products in your starter hamper. |

Seeds from Tamar Organics (10 packets) – RRP £1.67 each
Basil – Its greatest friends are the Mediterranean vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and courgettes but it also combines beautifully with fish. A simple rapeseed oil and lemon juice mixed with finely shredded basil leaves makes an excellent drizzling sauce for barbecued fish such as mackerel. Chives – Mix with soured cream, crème fraiche or a thick yoghurt (such as our own River Cottage well and truly "Live" 95% fat free organic natural yoghurt), then add to soups as a garnish. Alternatively use as a filling for jacket potatoes or a dip for crunchy vegetables. Coriander – wonderful in salsas to go with grilled meat or fish, try our fresh green tomato and coriander salsa on page 104, of the River Cottage Cookbook. Dill – Too often "forced too hard" in heated greenhouses the supermarket ‘growing pots’ have very feeble flavour. It’s well worth growing your own dill and goes very well with fish. Stuff inside the cavity of a gutted mackerel before placing on the BBQ or use in the cure and accompanying sauce of my Gravad Max on page 328, of the River Cottage Cookbook. Parsley – Good parsley sauce is hard to find but easy to make. Our recipe on page 119, of the River Cottage Cookbook, is a wonderful accompaniment to the spectacular glazed ham with spiced figs on page 226. Beetroot - Hugh said he used to hate beetroot but having grown it himself and tasted it fresh, its now a real favourite. Why not try his recipe on page 92, of the River Cottage Cookbook, for beetroot soup and feta which can be served both hot or chilled. Leeks – Pick leeks younger than you would buy them in the supermarket and grill them. Then serve cold with a dressing or rapeseed oil or melted butter and a sprinkle of Cornish sea salt.
Radishes – just pull, rinse and crunch! Rocket – Delicious peppery salad leaves that are wonderfully easy to grow.
Salad Leaves – the beauty of growing your own salad leaves, apart from the obvious wonderful range of flavours, is that you only need pull up a few leaves and save the rest for tomorrow. |

Shipton Mill Organic White Flour – RRP £1.50
At Shipton they mill a wide range of organic flour. However there is more to them than just being a speciality miller of organic flour. They have a deep seated belief that what they do, they do better than anybody!
It is recorded in the Domesday Book that a mill stood where the current mill stands. The stoneground flours that now bear the historic name of Shipton Mill are made with traditional French Burr stone millstones in the self-same way as in medieval days and as much of the grain as possible comes from local farms. Shipton Mill stoneground flour is once again a product of the mill - and of the place. Corn continues to come in for milling, in part, from the same Cotswold landscape that is the setting for the mill.
