This one day course will introduce you to spinning wool and experimenting with natural dyes. The day will be led by Miranda Follett–Millard. A member of the River Cottage team, Miranda is a local expert on traditional wool and dye techniques. She has gathered her knowledge and expertise on this subject for a number of years now and has recently set up Moo Moo Trading, a fashion accessories and home-ware brand, using local design, manufacture and locally derived materials.

The day will be unique working with every part of River Cottage, from the sheep, to the garden, the kitchen and the hedgerows. We will be using wool from our sheep to spin, seasonal plants from the River Cottage garden, as well as vegetable tops and peelings taken from the kitchen and to make wonderful natural dyes.

The day will be divided up into three parts

During Part one we will visit our sheep on the farm, where you will be shown different breeds, different wools and which are the best to use for spinning.

Part two will be an introduction on how spinning wool works, learning methods and terminology as well as taking it into practice. This will lead us up to lunch time, where you will have a delicious two course lunch.

Part three The afternoon session will be spent look at natural dyes. Given a list of plants to look out for from the garden and hedgerows, we will go out and forage for them. The products gathered will all be put together and a demonstration will be given on how to use the various items, as well as other ingredients to create the dye. Throughout the demonstration aa detailed history of dyes and wool techniques will be talked about, helping you to understand how processes have evolved and methods achieved. You will then have a go at making different dyes for yourself which can be bottled up to keep.

To take home, you will have your own hand spun wool, naturally dyed and a bottled of dye to take home, as well as a pack including a list of different natural dyes to experiment with in your spare time.
