The River Cottage Barn is Back!

Just 18 months after a devastating fire tore through the heart of River Cottage HQ on the Devon-Dorset border, the farm’s seventeenth century barn is restored to its former glory.

Thanks to a herculean effort from the entire River Cottage team, and the painstaking work of skilled local craftspeople, the beautiful threshing barn, which was completely gutted by the fire, looks better than ever.

"Everyone here at River Cottage HQ responded to the crisis with inspiring energy and positivity,’ said Hugh.

"I am extremely proud of the way the team worked so hard to get things back on track after the fire. And I couldn't be more thrilled with the beautifully restored barn. The rebuilding has allowed us to shape and design the space so that it is an even better venue for the many courses and events we hold at River Cottage. It's such a pleasure to be welcoming our guests again into this stunning space."

In the wake of the crisis, which made national headlines, the River Cottage team pulled together with amazing determination. Within two weeks, RCHQ’s usual programme of events and dinners was running as normal, housed in a huge ‘field kitchen’, a temporary tented space fully equipped with ovens and workstations. Meanwhile, the process of rebuilding and repair on the main site began.

The magnificent barn is now complete. In addition to its skilfully restored original structure, it now boasts a new, purpose-built teaching area which will be particularly important for the recently launched, City & Guilds-accredited Chef’s School.

Many of the classic River Cottage cookery courses will also take place in this space. These include regular one-, two- and four-day courses, such as the hugely popular Build and Bake (where participants build their own clay bread oven), Smoking and Curing, and Pig in a Day, with brand new courses to be introduced over the coming months.

The original barn will now function largely as an atmospheric space for dining, a wonderful setting for River Cottage weekend events, weddings and seasonally-themed dinners.
