New arrivals

Some of the new arrivals at Park Farm...

Dear Friends of River Cottage,

It’s May and things are looking up – or at least pointing up. With unashamed childlike delight, I’ve just picked my first asparagus of the season. The slim stems are so sweet you can eat them raw, but of course that isn’t stopping me from dipping them into plenty of Anchovy and Caper Mayonnaise, my cheaty Hollandaise, or melted butter.

It’s been a busy time on the farm and not just because everything is growing furiously. We’ve been sharing our beautiful corner of Devon with camera crews for the past few weeks and on May 28th, Channel 4 will broadcast the first of four programmes which will give a real insider’s view of what goes on behind the scenes at River Cottage.

It’s my dearest wish that it will inspire viewers to plant a little of that River Cottage spirit into their lives, or at least into their gardens. When people come on our courses, particularly kids, it’s thrilling to see them make the connection between the land and the food they eat, and I hope that this new show will allow us to share that excitement with a wider audience.

In the programmes, you’ll see our Land Team hard at work in the vegetable gardens and our resident host, Steven Lamb, building an enviably well appointed house for the newly-arrived ducklings. There has been much in the news lately about bees and the show will also introduce you to Cat Streatfeild, who takes care of our hives. I’ve been spending quite a bit of time away from the farm lately, working on a challenging new project in Bristol – to find out what that is you’ll have to tune into the show!

Cat and her bees

Tending the hives

So much has changed here since we took up residence at Park Farm two years ago. We tweak, develop and improve all of the time and these programmes document this. I know you share my commitment to local, seasonal food. So as we learn and grow, I’m sure you do too.

What excites me most about the path we’re on is that it’s a continuum. Small changes that we make, that you make, have a cumulative and enormously beneficial effect on the food we eat and the land on which it’s nurtured.

I can’t leave you without a couple of great recipes which make the most of May’s bounty. I hope you’ll find time to try my Ultimate Creamed Spinach and Foil-baked Sea Trout with Salsa Verde. It’s going to be a busy summer, and these will certainly keep your strength up!

All the best,

Hugh

Simon Hansford Steven Lamb This month’s garden blog is from Simon Hansford, our Head Gardener, as he prepares for the launch of our Members' Seed Project.

We also have a behind-the-scenes blog from our events host, Steven Lamb. To read them both, visit our blogs homepage.

Slimline Stinger

Much as we loved those chunky bottles of Stinger, we're also constantly working to make the packaging of all our products as environmentally-friendly as possible.

Stinger's slimline new look means that less glass is used for each bottle, a small change which makes our organic nettle ale even more eco-friendly!

Sheppy's organic cider

Free Beer Draw Winner
We held a prize draw for purchasers of Stinger during April - the winner was Claire Watkins from Croydon, who receives a free case of Stinger. Congratulations Claire, and bottoms up!

By now you probably know that Stinger is available at a discount as part of our regular subscription service, but you might not know that we’ve added a wide selection of West Country ciders too. Why not have a look at what we can offer?

Cheers!

Wild garlic, or
ramsons Wild garlic (or ramsons) is widespread, easy-to-recognise, and one of the most delicious of wild foods. Both leaves and flowers have a deliciously mild flavour, and are extremely versatile, lending themselves to many different recipes.

However, they're not around for much longer! May is the last month you can confidently expect to find them - so if you've never filled your pockets with this free treasure, what are you waiting for?

So if the ramsons are going, what else should you be on the lookout for? Find out on one of our events...

We have a limited number of tickets left for Herbal Hedgerows on Monday 12th May, and our Wild Food Feast evening on Friday 16th May, both of which will teach you how to make the best of fresh, seasonal - and free - wild foods. Book by calling Hayley on 01297 630 302, or click the links for more information.

At the Store in Axminster...

We've been welcoming people from far and wide to our Axminster store:

"Read an article in magazine about shop and canteen, on holiday from Isle of Skye, well worth stopping for lunch. Food and atmosphere very high standard. And shop full of tasty food." (Visitor comments, April 2008)

During May and June, you'll have a unique opportunity to meet the stars of the new River Cottage series at the River Cottage Canteen. We've also got a brand new series of Meet the Producer events: visit the Store and Canteen homepage for further details
