Getting sheepskins tanned
Hi Folks
With Fenland Skins closing down I am stuck for a place to get my skins tanned. I only have a small number (6) and am based in Hampshire.
Any recommendations
Thanks
The next nearest is Devonia sheepskins at Buckfastleigh, Devon. I haven't used them myself yet, but will do when the need arises!
They just happened to be in the news yesterday www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-15429759
Well, I'm relieved that they're not closing. They've got my sheepskins. They make the Axminster sheepskins so if you want to see the quality of their work go to a good carpet shop with Axminster sheepskin rugs.
I've had my skins back from Devonia. They're OK, but I'm not going to rave about them. The fleece side is interesting and I would probably prefer it to the finish Fenland had. The skin side was a bit rough and definitely not as good as Fenland. I don't know yet whether I'd use them again, if I had an alternative. Has anyone else come up with an alternative?
The Smallholder Series website lists UK tanneries
http://www.smallholderseries.co.uk/index.php?option=com_weblinks&view=category&id=86%3Awool-sheepskin-processing-services&Itemid=152
'Devonia Products' and 'Organic Sheepskins' are listed. Let me know if there are any others and I'll add it to the list.
Have a look at our article on 'Producing your own sheepskin' - a step-by-step guide on salting your skins (you do have to login to access the article).

Or you can look at the sheepskin salting photos on our Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/TheSmallholderSeries
I was going to recommend organic Sheepskins in Herefordshire - their details have been included above on the post by Smallholder Series ...
