Mackeral cost

by oddjobrob

I really support the fish fight and hate the thought of all the waste. I'm also amazed that we're told Mackeral is a far more sustainable and "cheaper" alternative to cod and haddock. I myself really like mackeral, and was astonished last week whilst comparing prices in my local tesco. I admit I can't remember the exact prices but I do remember that mackeral fillets were somewhere in the region of £1 per kilo dearer than both cod and haddock fillets. Therefore, being on a budget I opted for some haddock instead. Come on Mr Tesco you greedy boy yet again you prove that every little helps. Your bloody shareholders!

I am right behind you here.. they used to be soo cheap but now they are in the same league as cod and haddock.. the fish n chip shops will be raking it in as they wont sell cheaper fish at a lower cost to the customer so its a win win for them and once again we get clobbered..

Make yourself at home!!! Clean my kitchen. A balanced diet is a piece of cake! In each hand.

Mackerel is out of season pretty much in coastal waters but Dont know which Tossco's you are using but its only 4 Gbp a kilo in Northern Ireland

Tesco rip off? Big shock. Try going down to your local market or fishmongers. I can get a full fresh mackerel for about £2.20.

I bought 2 packets of smoked mackerel last week, one was priced £7.48 per kg the other £10.48, a very sudden increase!!! I remember it being really cheap, not so now though!!!!

I was annoyed today while looking at the various fish in tesco. Sure they had the 'lesser' fish out and on display but they were for the same price as the 'prime' fish. Even the frozen fish had bigger varity, but again with the same price. Coley (which is claimed to be a faction of the price) exactly the same price as cod. Basa (??) MORE expensive than cod.

That's Tesco again, you need to get out of Tesco and into a market when possible. Mackerel is £1.78lb compared with sea bass at 3.98lb in my local market and it's all fresh too of course.

at tesco mansfield near nottingham we are seeing an increasing variety of fresh fish over the last few weeks, for instance yesterday i noticed  sprats, coley, herring, sardines and dab are now available. mackerel is still cheap compared to cod and haddock per kilo but have to admit very anoying how sudenly the price of more sustainable fish has increased just because supermarkets are exploiting the increase in demand for sustainable fish.

I am travelling to Cornwall next week. Hubby very tempted to call in at RC canteen Monday 21st for a mackerel bap. Aside from the 20 mile deviation (:o() I'm hoping it will be the best of the best - one of those food savouring moments that is never outshined!

Madly, OH and I went to Whitstable a few weeks ago (day out, and to get some bits and pieces for the freezer) came home empty handed. Fish on the dock was very over priced, and looked like it was anything but fresh!

Rainham (Hales and Moore) it was instead

I'm surprised at the prices, while its true the price has increased (probably due to the publicity it has received recently) I got a whole mackerel for £1.40 from ASDA or Morrisons - cant remember which.
