The Perfect End
Talking about this in the "Perfect Marriage" thread...how would you like your life to end...or someone else's
Myself, peacefully and with dignity....and there are a few people I could quite happily do away with.
If I had something inoperable, untreatable or serious brain injury, I would be able to choose when I was ready to be euthanised. I would like to be able to choose for myself to preserve my dignity and die before I had to have physical intervention no matter how good the care is.
Having worked in palliative & elderly care in the past, so many times my charges begged for the same thing. Most commonly was the murmurings of someone who has no peace from pain who whispers "please please, I'm begging you, just kill me" at 3am when they get no real sleep and are never fully comfortable. It broke my heart that they had no real choice about their end & I was impotent to do anything except try to soothe their despair with pointless words.
I do not want this for myself so why should anyone else have to suffer if they don't want to.
I'd like to be soothed off to sleep, in my own bed if possible, with an increasing dose from a syringe driver of something that was going to kill me softly.
I agree with you jojo, like you I've worked in those areas and still do in an EMI unit. Life can be so cruel...... if it was an animal you could end it's suffering but not with another person.
If it was a close family member that was ill, I wouldn't hesitate to assist if that's what they really wanted.
For me, the ideal way to check-out of this life would be to go to sleep one night, in my own bed, and not wake up in the morning.
I suspect that the reality will be somewhat different though.
I'd like to go peacefully in my sleep like my Grandad did.
Not screaming and shouting.....like his passengers.
For those who watch game of thrones, one of the characters (Tyrion lannister) was asked how he'd like to die, well I want what he said. I can't repeat it but that's the way.

There's the link but don't watch if you may be offended
lol Marks!
Agree a nice peaceful departure would be the ideal and I'll keep my fingers crossed for that!!

Like you I too have worked with the elderly and seeing them through the next stage ie death can be really upsetting, some go with grace and peace on the faces other not so willing or peaceful. I thought is was a privilege to be with some that were dying, giving comfort and just being with them. The thought of dying a lone is a scary one. Like a few have already said I want to go in my sleep and have no pain or knowledge that I'm about to die. I'm not afraid of dying anymore, think you resign yourself to it as you get older, I'm looking forward to the peace and quiet tbh..
