Never went for high platforms; mine were far more modest. The style in my teens was winkle pickers and cuban heels. They could be surprisingly comfortable for dancing; I had a really nice white pair that were great.
My first set of clumpy high heels went straight back to the shop when Dad realised they made me taller than him. Stilettos were a thing of the eighties and soon discarded as they made me far too tall to find a man I could go out with, and frankly, they are just too darn uncomfortable for any sane person to choose to wear.
Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
This is a great thread but as a young stripling I don't really have any horror stories to tell (apart from the Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan patches my mum sewed onto the legs of my jeans )

Horses for courses I spose. I loved wearing stilettos, comfortable and sane.
