onion help

asked by lownzy on

I bought some ready to plant onions from b&q around march time as they were on offer for a pound. I threw them into the ground not expecting much but have noticed they now have shoots about four inches long. When should I harvest?

Rhubarb plants and elder bushes -help!

asked by Izzy_o1 on

Hi and first of all apologies for my probably very silly questions, but I am a total novice at this!

I really wanted to plant some rhubarb in our garden, so I bought a packet of seeds and planted them out a couple of weeks ago. However, I have since read up that plants won't be ready for harvesting for another couple of years yet -I am very impatient, so it's too long to wait for me! So I was looking at getting a developed plant from a well known stockist, but their online catalogue says: "These young plants will quickly mature, resulting in crowns big enough to harvest from 2 years after planting." Well that's the same, I don't want to wait THAT long! Is there a special way in which you can buy it, plant it, and start using it the same year, a bit like strawberries?

My other question is... I would also like an elder bush and my OH's grandma has one in her garden. Is it possible to take a cutting and plant it out in our garden? Will that work? Or would we have to buy them like we would any other fruit tree? If we can just "borrow" a bit from the existing one, is there a special way to do it so that it establishes well? I realise I probably will have to be patient with this one though :)

I would be really grateful of any advice,

Thank you :) Izzy x

Snowy spuds

asked by Jalcrazy on

So, it snowed overnight here. First earlies potatoes went in the ground three weeks ago and we've been frost free since then. They haven't broken through yet and now they're under half an inch of snow! Have I lost them?
