This course will introduce you to the many edible species of plants that can be found growing wild in our hedgerows, woods and fields. There is much that can be eaten – and much which cannot, but how do you tell the difference? Our resident wild food expert, John Wright, will guide you safely through the pleasures and perils of nature’s spring harvest. Keep me informed >
The day will start with a light breakfast (including, maybe, one of our famous “forager’s nips”!). We will then spend two or three hours exploring the countryside at, and around, Park Farm (RCHQ), looking for and collecting anything wild that might be eaten.
Back in our converted threshing barn, John will then host a cookery demonstration with some of the great dishes that can be created using simple ingredients from the wild. With your appetite suitablly whetted, we will then sit down to eat at around 2pm.
The afternoon will be spent discussing the plants that were found on the forage and others that John will bring with him. Topics such as simple ways of identifying plants to their particular families, poisonous species, conservation, the law of foraging and the more exotic wild foods such as birch sap and spring fungi will be covered.
A labelled display of everything that has been found will be set out, helping you to identify these species in the future.
John also teaches Edible Seashore during the Spring and Mushroom Foraging during the Autumn.
The afternoon of this event is demonstration based. Practical participation is not required, although volunteers are encouraged to take part in the demonstrations, at some point during the day.
