Join River Cottage Head Chef Gill Mellor, Host Steve Lamb and the team of accomplished River Cottage chefs for our One Day Cookery School.
 
Based on Hugh’s River Cottage Every Day, this course is designed to teach you a range of skills and techniques whilst applying the River Cottage philosophy in your Everyday cooking. We will introduce you to the variety of skills needed in a kitchen, whilst sampling and cooking some delicious, classic, River Cottage recipes. Keep me informed >

COURSE DETAILS

Arrive: Tractor ride down to the farm

Welcome: Meet your hosts Steve Lamb and Head Chef Gill Mellor, see for yourself the famous River Cottage farmhouse and kitchen garden. Enjoy a morning tea or coffee and tasty River Cottage treats.

Practical session one: Bread - the perfect start to the day, we kick off  by preparing a basic bread recipe. You will be coming back to the bread throughout the day as you 'knock back', shape and bake your loaves before enjoying the fruits of your labour for lunch.  

Practical session two:  Meat - learn a range of butchery techniques as you bone, roll and stuff a breast of lamb. You will also cook up another River Cottage favourite 'Devilled Kidneys'. Both these dishes celebrate the River Cottage philosophy to eating meat and our nose to tail approach.

Practical session three: Fish - Fish make up an important part of the menu at River Cottage and in this session you will learn about filleting and boning before frying your freshly caught fish.

Lunch: At River Cottage food is very much the focus and your two sumptuous two course lunch of local seasonal fare prepared by the River Cottage team will not disappoint.

Practical session four: Baking - In this session you will be baking some cake for your afternoon tea, such as Gills favourite, Honey wholemeal cake.

Practical session five: Veg - Raid the kitchen garden as you make your very own fresh pesto from scratch.

Close: Enjoy a slice of cake, pick up your complementary copy of Every Day, have a chat with fellow course attendees and members of the River Cottage team, before jumping on the tractor to take you back up the hill.

This is a guide to the activities that will make up your course at River Cottage. This is by no means set in stone and will depend on the season as well as the groups interest.

Location: This course is run from River Cottage HQ on the Dorset/Devon borders. Full address details of HQ will be provided once you have booked.

Wine/drink: We are a licensed venue. We have a wide selection of the finest organic wines.

Age: We would advise that this course is only really suitable for 12yrs of age and upwards. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. We put these guidelines in place for the safety, comfort and enjoyment of all our guests.

Time: 9.30am - 5.00pm

This is a really enjoyable day at Park Farm, River Cottage HQ. Perfect for the keen amateur cooks. Met some very like minded people, whole group of 20 were very friendly. Also good to meet the people we have all seen on the TV series, Gill, Steve Lamb and even Hugh ! The whole team of people that are there during the day couldn't have made this experience any better. Many thanks to Chef Neil and Michelle who kept us in order during the day. This course/day covers a wide range of cooking skills, i.e. bread, pastry, fish and meat, all of which you prepair and cook yourselves with the help of the team and you get to eat what you have cooked. It was just like being a celebrity chef for the day as all the ingredients are measured out ready for you, we didn't even do the washing up ! Facility is ideal for a very friendly well run course. Many thanks to all at River Cottage for a really enjoyable day. I look forward to doing another course soon !

I had a great day! I met some really interesting people over a shared love of food and learned some new skills that helped to give me more confidence in the kitchen! However I was disappointed that Gill and Steve were not there and we weren't told why. The chef who led the course was fantastic, but I was disappointed not to have met Gill and Steve. I love the cook book that was given to me at the end of the day and have just received my copy of the new veg book too. :)

What an amazing day, very well organised maximising your time to cook! on arrival we were greeted with freshly made drop scones and coffee before heading over to the cookery school. Through out the day we made bread, Almond & honey cake, Mussels with chirozo, leeks and cider, home made pizzas baked in the woodfired oven, lamb with potato & carrot rosti, squashed sprouts. Steve Lamb gave us a demo on sausage making. Everything we made we got to eat or take home in goody bags. we were presented with a book at the end of the day. All in all a fantastic day and i'm itching to book the next. Many thanks to all at River Cottage HQ for such a great day, especially the dish washing angels!!
