Welcome to the River Cottage online bread making course. You bread-making adventure starts here!

Bread is such a familiar part of our everyday diet that it’s sometimes easy to overlook - why bother making your own when it’s so readily available in every supermarket?

It’s also shrouded in mystery, with talk of fermenting yeast, knocking back and proving, turning the most confident cooks to jelly.
 
But bread, as the saying goes, is the staff of life, and what could be more life-affirming than knocking up your own wholemeal loaf for lunch, or making delicious fluffy croissants for friends at weekend brunch?

Can anything beat a hunk of freshly baked bread, slathered in butter and jam, or the vibrant aromas of a fresh focaccia torn to pieces over a lively supper?
 
In this course we’ll show you how to make a simple white loaf and some easy everyday variations on the theme, we’ll look in-depth at the key ingredients used in bread-making and show you how to use them with confidence,  and we’ll de-mystify the bread-making process, so from here on in, you’ll always be able to make your own bread with ease.

All you need to do is use your loaf!

Came on the course at River Cottage HQ and really enjoyed it, and as soon as I got back home I found myself logging straight into the online course for more! Very informative, great for those rainy days, and I have recommended it to all my friends.

Book v's Online Course?

This course is basically an online version of the River Cottage Handbook No.3. The book is a wee gem, just the right level of info/instruction/recipes etc and a must have for any budding baker. Not sure it works quite so well in electronic form as there aren't enough 'extras' (videos/interaction etc) to justify a separate product (the benchmark for the online courses is the Pig in a Day, where bespoke instructional videos fully justify the online course as a stand alone product). There are also significantly more recipes in the book and more detailed instructions on making a bread oven. I guess its just down to personal preference, must say, I'm old school and prefer a hard copy to take to the kitchen and read in bed. A few floury fingerprints on your bread book adds character; half a pound of flour stuck in your laptop doesn't have quite the same charm?

I have had an amazing journey on the bread course, my handmade bread has gone from being brick like to feather light in no time at all. The bread course is simple to follow, easy to understand and extremely useful as reference to return to. It's so good I now even have my 12 year old daughter making her own bread too! I have thoroughly enjoyed my foray into the world of bread and am now baking fresh every day, much to the delight of my family. Thank you to all the river cottage team for making this course so enjoyable, I hope I can try some other courses in the future!

I will no longer worry about making bread after doing the online course. This was a very informative course, great that you can print everything off too. As I don't have the luxury of a laptop yet, so being able to print recipes and instructions saved endless trips upstairs to computer. The videos were also a great help and short enough and to the point not to overwhelm you. I have only made the white loaf so far but it was a great success and tastes good , This weekend its the wholemeal one. and I am looking forward to trying out the other recipes especially the foccacia. I am now a convert to making my own bread, as I do like to know whats in what im eating, so it will be a regular thing now and I can't wait to experiment. will definatly be trying some of the other online courses.

I really enjoyed working my way through this course. I have definitely become a better baker from it. The videos were helpful because I could actually see what my bread was supposed to look like at each stage. Previously my problem was that my dough was too dry. The course provided a good selection of recipes that were both easy and challenging. I have learned that bread baking is something that you need to practice to become great at. This course did give me the confidence to keep practicing, I haven't bought a loaf since I started 3 months ago. My bread is tastier than most of what I can purchase and I love making it. I would highly recommend the "River Cottage Bread Handbook," it compliments the online course wonderfully and has more recipes.
