One of the most popular cookery courses at our award-winning cookery school, Four Days at River Cottage is the perfect culinary experience. You will be looked after every step of the way by our River Cottage tutors and chefs, and leave armed with the skill, confidence and inspiration to cook delicious food at home.
From baking your own sourdough to learning the principles of butchery and offal, your four days will cover a huge range of basic and advanced kitchen skills – and you’ll get to taste all the results along the way too! Learn how to source the very best ingredients, fillet fish and shellfish. You may be making pâté, rustling up a good gravy, smoking, curing and marinating meat. Knock up fantastic vegetarian recipes, indulge your sweet tooth with cake, pastry and desserts… and much, much more, all set against the breathtaking rural backdrop of River Cottage HQ.

Arrive at River Cottage
You’ll be met at the top of the hill each morning at 9.30 and transported down to the famous farm by tractor and trailer.
Make yourself at home
Start each day with tea or coffee and treats fresh from the kitchen.
Bread and baking
Learn about the principles of good bread, with the chance to knead, shape and bake your own loaf as well as mastering pastry, cakes and puddings.
You will be introduced to the River Cottage nose-to-tail philosophy and a wide range of butchery and cookery techniques, including offal, slow-cooking and making the perfect stock.
We’ll show you how to turn the bountiful produce of our kitchen garden into vegetable gratin, pesto, salad, soup, sauces and other tasty vegetarian recipes.
Get to grips with basic fish preparation, gutting and filleting, master some great fish dishes and gain an insight into the issues around ethical and sustainable fish.
After all your hard work, you’ll finish each day by tucking into your freshly-made meal of local, seasonal fare.
Please note: This is a guide to the activities that will make up your course at River Cottage. This is by no means set in stone and will depend on seasonal availability.
On occasion cookery schools will use equipment that includes induction hobs. It is recommended that people with pace makers should not work on these units. If you are concerned or would like to check whether or not induction hobs will be used on the course you are interested in, please call us on 01297 630302.
This course is run from River Cottage HQ on the Dorset/Devon borders. Full address details of HQ will be provided once you have booked.

We would advise that this course is only really suitable for 12 years of age and upwards. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. We put these guidelines in place for the safety, comfort and enjoyment of all our guests.
