Cooking and Food Photography with Gill Meller
A great picture on Instagram is nothing unless it’s delicious, and there is no-one else better to teach you this than Gill Meller.
This informal day, run by Gill Meller, River Cottage Chef, award-winning author and food stylist, gives the food lover, cook and keen photographer alike the chance to come and cook, style and shoot their own food down at River Cottage, a stunning 95-acre organic farm on the Devon and Dorset border.
You’ll learn how to get the best shots and take mouth-watering photos of food, all set against the breath-taking backdrop of River Cottage HQ.
Guests will need to bring their own cameras or camera phones and any laptops or editing equipment they may require.
09.30 - 17.00
Arrive at River Cottage
You’ll be met at the top of the hill at 9.30 and transported to River Cottage HQ by tractor and trailer.
Make yourself at home
You will meet Gill in the farmhouse and start the day with tea, coffee and treats fresh from the kitchen. You will be given an overview of the day and have a chance to look around.
To get underway, you'll choose your ingredients and devise two dishes, under the careful and experienced eye of Gill.
Gill will guide you through what delicious things we have available, both in the kitchen and growing out in the gardens and fields around the farm then it will be up to you to go and pick them. The gardens and farm will be a perfect place to start taking pictures.
Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, it’s time to get cooking, and where better to do that than in 17th century farmhouse and our wood fired outdoor kitchen? Both locations are brimming with texture and natural beauty.
You’ll be photographing your food in the farmhouse, and if the weather permits, outside in the walled kitchen garden. You’ll have access to a host of lovely surfaces and a brilliant selection of props at your disposal.
You’ll then be able to enjoy the dishes you’ve created, and of course, this will provide the opportunity to take even more pictures!
Towards the end of the afternoon you’ll have time to edit your final pictures before uploading them to your own Instagram platforms.
After some deliberation and cogitation, Gill and the team will select their favourite 3 pictures, which will be posted on the River Cottage Instagram page for everyone to enjoy.
To throw in even more jeopardy, the person with the most ‘likes’ gets dinner on us – a meal for two at one of our Kitchens in Axminster, Bristol or Winchester.
Please note: This is a guide to the activities that will make up your course at River Cottage. This is by no means set in stone and will depend on seasonal availability.
On occasion cookery schools will use equipment that includes induction hobs. It is recommended that people with pace makers should not work on these units. If you are concerned or would like to check whether or not induction hobs will be used on the course you are interested in, please call us on 01297 630302.
