Natural Home and Beauty
Learn how to make your own natural items using ingredients from the River Cottage farm and garden.
River Cottage HQ has the pleasure of hosting Australian Rebecca Sullivan, author of The Art of The Natural Home series and founder of The Granny Skills Movement. Rebecca is a fountain of knowledge, having worked in food and sustainability for many years.
Rebecca will teach you how to take natural ingredients and turn them into natural cleaning supplies, health and beauty products and delicious items for your fridge and pantry too!
You will start the day with a morning forage around the famous River Cottage kitchen garden and surrounding hedgerows where you will gather an abundance of goods which will be the base of your products. It will then be back to the classroom to get stuck in before breaking to enjoy a delicious River Cottage lunch made with seasonal ingredients.
Everything you make during the day will showcase how easy it is to have a chemical free home and how you can make things from scratch for every room of your house using edible items. At the end of the day you will be able to take home and enjoy all of the goodies that you have made.

Arrive at River Cottage
You’ll be met at the top of the hill at 9.30am and transported to River Cottage HQ by tractor and trailer (approx. a 5 minute journey).
Start your morning with tea or coffee and tasty treats fresh from the River Cottage kitchen.
To get the day underway, Rebecca will take you on a tour of the River Cottage gardens and local hedgerows, collecting your ingredients as you go. You'll return to the barn and Rebecca will guide you through making a number of natural cleaning products and room fresheners.
Food is always the focus at River Cottage, and a two-course lunch of local, seasonal fare will be one of the highlights of your day.
After lunch you'll learn how to make some lovely health and beauty products, including body scrubs, deodorant, make-up and perfume, all using items foraged from the garden!
The day will then draw to an end and you’ll be taken back up the hill by our tractor and trailer (at 5pm), along with your lovely handmade products and all your skills to make your very own natural home.
Please note: This is a guide to the activities that will make up your course at River Cottage. This is by no means set in stone and will depend on seasonal availability.
On occasion cookery schools will use equipment that includes induction hobs. It is recommended that people with pace makers should not work on these units. If you are concerned or would like to check whether or not induction hobs will be used on the course you are interested in, please call us on 01297 630302.
