A Taste of River Cottage with Hugh
Spend an exciting afternoon with Hugh and the team, cooking and eating in the glorious surroundings of River Cottage.
Hugh has personally created this exciting new one-day course and supper to give just 10 guests a deeply memorable River Cottage experience.
In the course of an afternoon and evening you will spend time both cooking and chatting with River Cottage founder Hugh, in the Kitchen Garden, in the Cook's School, and around the table. You will cook alongside him, and join him and the River Cottage team in creating a fantastic feast for the end of your day.
Arriving at River Cottage HQ at noon, you will be greeted personally by Hugh, who will chat to you over coffee and a snack about the River Cottage philosophy, and the 25 year journey that has led him to embrace it. After a walk with Hugh in the garden and farm to select some key ingredients (some grown, some wild), he will lead you in a veg-based cooking session in the Cook’s School.
Hugh will then hand over to one our River Cottage tutor-chefs for the second cooking session, on either meat or fish, which will become part of your meal at the end of the day.
As the kitchen brings together a delicious feast based around the dishes you have made, Hugh will re-join you for drinks before supper, and will be happy to sign your books, take pictures with you, and answer any more of your questions. Then you will sit down with Hugh to enjoy the unique and personal menu which you have all created together.
Everybody will get to choose a River Cottage book signed by Hugh to take home, along with a bundle of River Cottage goodies, as a memento of this unforgettable day.

It will be hands on, and brains on, from start to finish, as we explore the best ingredients of the season, and talk about how food can change our lives, and indeed make the world a better place. Make yourself at home
You will meet your host (and Hugh!) and begin the day with a light lunch fresh from the kitchen.
Take a walk with Hugh around the Kitchen and Market gardens, collecting ingredients as you go.
Head into the cookery school as Hugh guides you through a veg based cookery session where you'll learn to make the most out of your freshly picked produce.
Under the guidance of one of our skilled Chef Tutors, you'll create a meat of fish based dish which will become part of your feast later on in the day.
Relax with a drinks
The River Cottage Kitchen team will put the finishing touches to your dishes, whilst you relax with a glass of fizz and canapes with Hugh. Now is a perfect opportunity to get a book signed or have a photo with Hugh.
Hugh will join you at the table as you tuck into a 3-course feast of the finest seasonal food, including the dish you made earlier.
Coffee and petits fours
After dinner you’ll unwind with coffee and petits fours (if you still have room), before heading home.
Please note: This is a guide to the activities that will make up your course at River Cottage. This is by no means set in stone and will depend on seasonal availability.
On occasion cookery schools will use equipment that includes induction hobs. It is recommended that people with pace makers should not work on these units. If you are concerned or would like to check whether or not induction hobs will be used on the course you are interested in, please call us on 01297 630302.
This course is run from River Cottage HQ on the Dorset/Devon borders. Full address details of HQ will be provided once you have booked.
We are a licensed venue. We have a wide selection of the finest organic wines available to purchase.
This event is for guests over the age of 13 only. Under 16s must be accompanied by a paying adult. We put these guidelines in place for the safety, comfort and enjoyment of all our guests.
Sorry, we’re afraid this course is not suitable for those with allergies or specific dietary requirements. However we do run courses that are gluten free, vegetarian and vegan friendly. Please get in touch if you have any questions or need further details.
With many of our courses there are often treats and leftovers to take away with you. In our quest to be more sustainable we are encouraging guests to bring their own containers and bags to transport their produce home. Details of what is required for each course will be included in booking emails.
